Self-Protection For the Everyday Person
I came across Target-Focus Training after my friend was stabbed to death on the front steps of my high school in 2003. I looked for a complete system that addresses weapons (knives, clubs, guns), multiple attackers for the realities of the street. Much of what I found was rooted in traditional martial arts for health, competition and was not suited for real-life violence.
I believe I have found that system. No belts, no uniforms, no bravado. Target-Focus Training is a principle-based system so you don’t have to memorize a thousand different moves. It doesn’t take years to learn. It has far surpassed anything that I’ve been taught in the military and in traditional martial arts, which was hitting the pads with mindless repetition and yelling “Kill!”.
You don’t need to be bigger, stronger, faster, more athletic than your attacker. You need to learn how to leverage your bodyweight, his vulnerable body parts. You need to learn about and how to effectively use violence. Yes, you can learn how to effectively use violence in a self-defense situation from a DVD like I did since 2004. Even better is a live training seminar, which I did in October 2007, which can complement whatever your training you may (not) have.
Defeating Weapon Attacks DVD: I would recommend this if your concerns are knives (edged), clubs (impact) or guns (firearms). You will learn that striking is the foundation, it doesn’t matter what your attacker is doing and that the brain is the most dangerous of weapons.Striking DVD: It’s not just punching or kicking. Learn to generate force 3.5x your bodyweight. The gemstone of this series is multi-striking and multiple attackers. I would recommend this with or after Defeating Weapon Attacks.
Live Training: The focus of a live training seminar is to get knowledge across. Learn to destroy the human body in an objective way. This is not a martial arts conditioning class where people yell at or intimidate you. I took the plunge in 2007. Highly recommended. You can see a clip here.
Lethal Leverage DVD: This series teaches how to break each major joint in the human body in six different ways including, the spine and neck. Each joint break is set-up with a strike, which I recommend learning from Striking Series. It is not submission grappling.
Throwing: This is not Judo throwing. Throwing is a type of strike where your attacker hits the concrete. Throws are set-up with strikes so I recommend Striking before watching this.
Here are programs for recovery, recuperation and pain-relief to address tightness or injury.
RESILIENT: Advanced Kettlebell Drills and Insider Secrets for Playing Hard and Hurting Less Use this program with one 26-pound kettlebell (and/or even a 35-pound kettlebell). See my experience in fixing my nagging knee pain here. This DVD program’s drills covers the jaw, neck, shoulders, elbows, spine, hips and knees “…for restoring and reinforcing your body’s ‘rebound strength’…weak links”.
I generally recommend 26-pounds in almost all cases. (If you are a larger, above-average strength male, then 35-pounds may be good for your shoulders). Why do I recommend premium DragonDoor kettlebells?
Recuper8 – Pain Free Recuperation for Tactical First Responders Follow this FREE 1-hr program everyday for 2-3 weeks. Fix your neck, shoulder, elbow, chest, spine, hips and ankles. One of the best and only mobility programs designed for really tight people. See my review here.
H.E.M. Sprained Ankle Rehab(Digital Download) – in 2013, I hopped off a curb and inverted my left ankle. My ankle was purple and swollen for days and I couldn’t walk. I found this program after searching online and it does work. Fix your ankle in 3 – 7 days using a combined method of hydrotherapy, massage w/ castor oil, mobility and strengthening exercises.
Ageless MobilityPain Free Wellness for Longevity (DVD or Audio) – is 1+ hour, head-to-toe, easy-to-follow, flagship program done once or twice a week. Its protocol combines Yogic stretching with dynamic mobility exercises done from head to hamstrings. Here is most of program demonstrated for FREE at a live Arnold Fitness Expo.
R.E.S.E.T. – Rapid Energy Sports Enhancement TechniquePerfect for those who need to slow down or speed up their heart rate. Here are some exercises taken from the DVD and put into a mini program on its own. It’s called Shoulder R.E.S.E.T. Do these drills between exercise rounds or if you have shoulder discomfort. I would say this represents about 25% of the material found on the full DVD.
Fast & Loose- Secrets of the Russian Champions: Dynamic Relaxation Techniques for Elite Performance – is similar to the above RESET program. Use this for kicking, punching, minimizing muscle pulls, recovery, staying loose, etc.
Kettlebell Workouts: I very much enjoy the kettlebell as it is a space-saving, practical tool. The tool is great for strength, cardio and when done properly doesn’t destroy your body. I also do some bodyweight exercises when I don’ t have access to bells, e.g. travelling.
The total program is 24+ minutes and includes warm-up and cool-down exercises. I consider this program to be done for cardio, muscular endurance rather than maximal strength and for moderate – high intensity.
Kettlebell PowerformanceSimilar to TACFIT Kettlebell Spestnaz, but instead of focusing on movements, it addresses the six, soft-tissue chains or myofascial lines (front, back, arms, core, spiral, lateral) in the body. Done for moderate – high intensity. I use this program to ‘re-balance’ myself in all myofascial lines.
Premium, Military-Grade Kettlebells
I follow the Simple & Sinister program. I use premium, military-grade DragonDoor RKC Kettlebells. You can read my review of RKC Kettlebells here. For men, you’ll need the following to the complete the Simple goal of 100 swings in 5 minutes, 10 Turkish Get-Ups in 10 minutes using 70 pounds.
If you do decide to finish the Sinister goals, which is the same as above, but with 106 pounds, you’ll need the following:
